Le Coucher du Soleil: Beauteous Budget Bungalows in Nosy Be

After a long (romantic) journey to Nosy Be we were two tired tourists – ready for some serious time out – but first things first – we needed a bed. We decided we would start our island Adventure in Ambatoloaka – one of the islands most touristy (and sleezy) beaches.

Unlike many of the other visitors to the city we were there for the bars – not the creepy sex tourism that we soon realised was surrounded us…

DSCN0491Like all well-prepared tourists we were armed with a Lonely Planet. Madagascar’s most ‘up-to-date’ 3-year-old version… But apparently 2015 Madagascar has a lot in common with 2012 Madagascar so we trusted that the hotel, Le Coucher du Soleil, would still be ‘the best budget option in Ambatoloaka’. For the ‘best budget option’ we were beyond impressed.

The hotel features seven charming bungalows and a team of friendly and very helpful staff. But the real highlight of the hotel is the view. Le Coucher du Soleil may not be on the beach itself, but up above the main street the view from the bar and restaurant is absolutely spectacular. This is budget luxury.

The location itself is also wonderful, a mere few minutes down the hill and you find yourself on Ambatoloaka’s main drag – right on the beach.

We only spent one night at Le Coucher du Soleil (as they were fully booked for the rest of our time on Nosy Be), but it was a wonderful experience and the staff were happy to store our luggage for us while we explored the island by scooter for a week.

The bungalows are charming but basic – with some only consisting of ‘traditional Madagascan showers’ – AKA a bucket. But for Ar55 000 for the bungalow per night (15 euros) it was a complete bargain. And the perfect start to our island escapade escape.

(Le Coucher du Soleil also features three very well-appointed apartments (€70 for four people). It’s signposted from the main street in Ambatoloaka, and there’s a shortcut down to the beach.)
