The word ‘quirky’ can be used to describe most of the establishments (and people) in Iceland. My favourite example of charming Icelandic quirkiness has to be Cafe Babalu in Reykjavik.

cafe babaluBabalu is charming and the food is simple but delicious.  The vegan carrot cake is to die for (I have heard similar reviews of the cheesecake and the cookies). But if you are after something warm and comforting (which everyone usually is in Iceland) don’t miss the chilli. And if you are anything like my friend Holly you can take it up to next-level comfort food by having them drown it in cheese.

The cozy cafe is not hidden at all inside the outrageously orange exterior. Adorned with cute cartoons and the bright blue windows and door. But inside it is like being at Grandma house. If Grandma ended up with 1000 grandchildren and has dedicated her golden years to feeding them chilli and cake until 10pm every day…

Basically, it is the perfect hangout for coffee, cake and chill and happiness while wearing your favourite Lopapeysa and discussing literature over a chess match.

And yes, it really does have a Star Wars themed bathroom.

May the force be with you, especially after that chilli…
