Iceland Stories from the Sky

Getting High in Iceland

By on April 12, 2014

IMG_9241 I have made some amazing friends in my travels and sometimes I feel spoilt rotten for having such amazing people in my life. It is hard to imagine what life would be like here in Iceland if I hadn’t met Jara. Jara is my first and one of my favourite Icelandic friends and since the day we met she has gone out of her way to make me feel at home in this cool country. This includes spontaneous late night trips to Valdis (Iceland’s coolest Icecream parlour), late night chats about life in Iceland including of course advice about confusing Icelandic boys and most recently inviting me along to get high with her on a beautiful Sunday morning.

But no Jara is not a drug addict – she is a pilot. And apparently it is pretty standard for pilots to spend their free time in the sky. So after spending some time hanging out at the flight club I met our companions for the morning – Þráinn and Össur. These two would make it their mission to test gravity and the strength of my stomach once we were in the air. (Don’t worry – my stomach may have been doing summersaults but I managed to keep down breakfast…) So I’m sure your wondering what it’s like to see this spectacular country from above and I can assure you it does not disappoint. From the colourful houses in Reykjavik to vast lakes, mountains and volcanoes there is no angle of Iceland that does not spark incredible awe. And seeing the crack left by the break in the American and European tectonic plates? Incredible. So takk fyir Jara, Össur and Þráinn. I will never forget how much fun it was to get high in Iceland with the three of you.
