The Atacama Desert’s Cejar Lagoon

By on May 2, 2016

Heading to the Atacama Desert? Then you must make a visit to The Cejar Lagoon… And prepare to get salty.

IMG_0241The western world is obsessed with weight – so why not experience what it’s like to lose ALL your weight… And no it’s not some rural desert fat camp. The Cejar Lagoon is an desert oasis – a warm lagoon of clear water… that happens to have a high salt content that creates a large buoyancy (AKA super light and floaty) effect  – a lot like the better-known Dead Sea.

So want to hear the latest weight loss tip? Take a tour to Cejar lagoon and miss your bus back. You may be wrinkly and salty after a while but hey at least you’ll feel light!
But extreme desert weight loss aside, the Cejar lagoon is a spectacular (and super fun) day trip from San Pedro and I would highly recommend it for a warm desert day (AKA any day in summer). You will floatIMG_0149 in the gorgeous turquoise water until your heart’s content all whilst surrounded by the spectacular
panorama of the Andes (and about 50 other tourists).
After a couple of hours of salty floating our tour continued on to the Ojos del Salar eyes of the Salt Flat, two wells for fresh water in the middle of the
desert. This bizzare spot was enchanted by the bizarreness of all the tourists that couldn’t resist juping in… Maybe they were washing off the salt..?

The next stop was the Tebinquinche lagoon where we admired the panorama of the Andes across the IMG_0231whiteness of the incredible salt flat… And where our guide also treated us to an aperitif as the sun set… After a long day in the sun we finally had a drink (a traditional pisco sour, of course) and my mum’s smile was almost as spectacular as the sunset itself…

We did our day trip with Terra Extreme…
