Anjo Verde: Vegetarian Heaven in Braga

Being a vegetarian in Portugal can be challenging. Being a vegan seems close to impossible. But sometimes it takes insider knowledge and a hidden gem of a restaurant to reveal that uttering the ‘V’ word can sometimes be understood in Portugal. If you’re really lucky, you may not even be asked if ‘you eat chicken or fish?’

In beautiful Braga I got really lucky. I was served a plate of food that was 100% vegan and 100% delicious. In the midst of cafes serving up dishes of heart attacks on a plate Francesinha’s, Anjo Verde tranfsorms vegetables into delectable dishes that even the biggest Francesinha-lovers can enjoy.

Basically you chose your main dish (there are about 6 vegetarian options, a couple being vegan), and you will be served a colossal plate that features the dish of your choice+rice+salads+deliciously-seasoned-pineapple, as well as a funky pot of green tea. Yum.

Vegetarians are not very well understood in Portugal, but there is hope. For me it came in the form of curried tofu and pineapple.
