Mont Passot: Panoramic Sunsets in Nosy Be

It seems that no matter where you are in the world there is a ‘must-see’ mountain- in Nosy Be that must-see is also called Mont Passot and the journey up this hill will reward you with a world-class panoramic sunset.

After a long scooter journey we reached the top of Mont Passot where after a short walk to the summit we were greeted by viewing decks, souvenir stalls and a child throwing rocks at us… It wasn’t the IMG_9315
warmest welcome but as the day descended the day was revived by the unavoidable romance and allure of that temporarily breathtaking nightfall.

I would highly recommend dragging yourself away from the spectacular beachside sunsets for a night to admire from the summit of Mont Passot, the highest viewpoint of Nosy Be.

Around Mont Passot there are seven sacred volcanic lakes, legend has it that the crocodiles that inhabit these lakes would be the reincarnations of the Malagasy ancestors; (just one of the many Malagasy legends that have some animal references but no deeper metaphorical meaning that you often find in legends…)

Despite the lack of legendary meaning, the lakes are truly spectacular and the panoramic map of the coast is a great way to appreciate the geography of the island that you would surely have fallen in love with by the time you visit Mont Passot.

We read in Lonely Planet that the area is known for muggings after sundown so if you are scootering around it may be wise to get back down after watching the final ray of light disappear over the horizon.
