Iceland
Icelands Glo
When people picture food in Iceland they probably conjure up images of vikings gnawing on dried fish and fermented shark. But for a country that sits just outside the arctic circle – Iceland is surprisingly health-conscious and has a thriving fresh food industry. Even though there are many who stick to the more traditional seafood-oriented meal plans, there are a range of options for the herbivores. My absolute favourite is without a doubt ‘Glo’.
The healthy choice restaurant serves the most delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes including a daily soup, vegetarian hot meal and raw vegan dish. But carnivores do not fear – they also serve chicken. Each main is served with a choice of 3 salads from the most bright, luscious salad bar I have ever set eyes on.
The food is always magnificent and the bets bit? Self-serve hummus. And it is good hummus. Really, really good hummus.
I received my fair share of judgemental save-some-hummus-for-the-rest-of-the-country looks, but if you are going to offer self-serve hummus, I am going to abuse the privilege. I have no self-control when pureed chickpeas are involved.
I first visited Glo with my mum after a rainy winter horse ride to escape a blizzard. It really was a glowing haven for two waterlogged Aussies. After moving to Reykjavik I did not hesitate to become a regular. Try it for yourself and you will understand why.
Oh, I forgot to mention the desserts… They are scarily delicious…
