Getting Grøddy in Copenhagen

After spending a month camping around Europe there were two things I missed most. My dogs and a warm bowl of oats in the morning.  As my dogs get car sick driving down our street, I had accepted that they weren’t going to make it to the other hemisphere in the near future. But it turns out oats are a global craving. A craving that can be best satisfied with a visit to Copenhagen’s gourmet oatmeal boutique, Grød.

P1010886You are probably picturing a sad-looking granny-run establishment, decorated with framed photos of cats, serving big bowls of boring, sticky oatmeal. But you couldn’t be more wrong. A typical Grød bowl is along the lines of spelt porridge with chestnut purée, apple and toasted almonds.

I stumbled upon the quirky porridge bar while aimlessly strolling around the beautiful streets of Copenhagen, and it has been one of my greatest global food discoveries. The Danish really know how to make breakfast – or lunch and dinner if you are that kind of all-hours breakfast addict…

Grød offers the best porridge that even the harshest Instagram breakfast addict can appreciate. Not only is the appearance every bowl worthy of at least 50 likes, they actually taste incredible. Vegan, gluten-free, and those suffering to allergies of everything tasty rejoice, because Grød caters to every tummy sensitivity. And lets face it, even if you are a carnivorous bacon-addict, porridge is so trendy right now. Skip the bacon and eggs one morning and appreciate some mouth-watering whole grains.

Grød offers traditional barley porridge, but you can get all kinds of other carbohydrates in porridge form here. From Asian-style congee to herb-complemented risottos, yes, risottos. Porridge and risotto, it is winter-food heaven.  The menu splits between breakfast foods and afternoon foods, so there is never a wrong time to visit Grød.

Surely such a gourmet indie hotspot will cost you an arm, leg and vital organ, right? Wrong. You don’t need to cash in your life savings for breakfast. For 35DKK ($7AUD) you can get yourself a hearty breakfast fit for a healthspo king.

P1010879The menu changes weekly, and can always be seen on their Facebook page but just a few of the fabulous menu-items include:

-GF oats with freeze dried raspberry, fresh mango, and roasted almond.

-Porridge with plum compote and yogurt

-Oats cooked in carrot juice with raisins

-Pumpkin Risotto

-Rye bread grain porridge cooked in sweet beer and beer juice

-Barley risotto with asparagus and greens.

So if you ever find yourself in Copenhagen, desperately craving the warm comfort of carbs, get Grøddy.
