An Afternoon in Ushuaia: The Journey on the Train to the End of the World
After many days of stunning scenic cruising through Tierra del Fuego we finally arrived at THE END OF THE WORLD (AKA Ushuaia – a quaint touristy city home to many fun-filled activities and eateries!)
Ushuaia. The city where the Andes unite with the southern ocean in a jumble of steep streets and colourful buildings. The city that leads to nothing but rough seas and the starting point for those heading to Antarctica. The city at the end of the world (sort of).
The city really works the whole end-of-the-world status though. It is a hub of souvenir shops and overpriced coffee. But for all of it’s novelty it has a lot to offer. From hiking, sailing, skiing, kayaking and even scuba diving there is something for absolutely everyone. Including the well-known TRAIN TO THE END OF THE WORLD.
Imagine boarding a train on a journey to the worlds end. Top the very tip of the planet. Tearing through rugged landscape – up steep hills and across long mountainsides. Cutting right through the Andes alongside the wild scenery of Tierra del Fuego. Imagine a journey unlike any adventurer has ever encountered…
The ‘Train to the End of the World’ is basically the complete opposite experience of what I just described.
Imagine arriving at the train station at the end of the world $2 short of our overpriced tickets. Imagine having to quickly ask a tourist you recognise from your cruise ship to lend you $2. Imagine waiting for what seems like monotonous hours standing in line surrounded by pushy tourists attempting to cut in front of you. Imagine boarding the pokiest, most crowded and uncomfortable compartment you have ever entered. Imagine waiting as the train starts to speed up only to realise it would have been quicker to walk than take the train. Imagine an awful incomprehensible voice over that communicates absolutely no useful information. Imagine thinking ‘get me off of this thing!’ in your head as you slowly board the mental train to insanity. Imagine the most disappointing train ride in the world.
That was what the train to the end of the world was really like.
We should have just stuck to ‘let’s go for a nice walk at the end of the world’ instead – it may not have the adventure appeal as the ‘Train to the End of the World’ but it would have probably been more stimulating…
(In saying that – it still was a beautiful view and the staff were quite friendly and if you are into snail-speed train journeys maybe opt for a one way ticket and give yourself some time to explore the park from the last stop).
