Getting my Kicks on Route 66
When I finished high school I headed to my paternal homeland in the USA to visit family and explore more of the land of the free. I did a tour with the youth travel company Contiki and one of the features of the trip was a getting some kicks on route 66… (Well, at least getting some touristy snaps).
Since 1926, driving down Route 66 has been the experience of a lifetime for travellers, adventurers, desperados and dreamers (Historic Route 66).
Route 66 has a pretty cool history as it served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System (route 66 USA)
These days a lot of the famous road no longer exist but some of the historic sights and memorabilia are still in place on the remaining parts of the road to be admired by travellers.
