The Alt-Wiener-Schnapsmuseum: Drinking Gold in Vienna
There are some things that are absolutely essential to do when in Vienna: admire great art, visit Hofburg palace, see a concert and drink gold. Yes, Vienna is home to The Alt-Weiner-Schnapsmuseum, the proud home of gold schnapps (as well as many other funky-flavoured liquors).
It was our first night in Vienna and before heading out for a night of classical tunes and cocktails we headed to the museum to learn all there is to know about producing the classical liquor. You know your night is going to be fancy when you go to a museum and end up drinking gold.
The old Viennese factory was built in 1875 and is considered a specialist in the making of liquors and brandies from ancient Fischer family recipes, who have been running the factory for five generations. Your tour guide will of course be a family member, and very likely be hilarious.
So if you are after an insight on the tradition of golden distillery (literally) do not miss a tour of the Alt-Weiner-Schnapsmuseum. Trust me, it is well worth the 5 euro tour fee for the amount of free testers…
