Campo Grande: The Gateway to the Pantanal

By on May 26, 2016

In the words of Lonely Planet…

‘Known as the Cidade Morena for its red earth rather than for its beautiful women (morena also means ‘brunette’), Campo Grande is the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul and the main gateway to the southern Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 3.02.37 pmPantanal.’

Yes a city of hot women where people go to get to hot wetlands. Not a place you want to miss on a trip to Brazil… Or is it..?

Campo Grande is one of those cities I have only been to out of necessity. We wanted to go to the Pantanal therefore we had to go to Campo Grande. End of discussion. Beginning of ridiculous flight paths.

From Iguazu Falls to Sao Paulo to Compo Grande. It took a day but we made it to this vast, modern metropolis.

We got in a taxi, went to our hotel and didn’t see anything else in the city besides the hotel lobby, our hotel room, the hotel restaurant and a couple of street-side views along the way.

But I must admit, the hotel was fairly nice for a corporate-style, personality-less modern mass.

It was the Hotel Deville Prime. I think I booked it because it sounded a bit naughty. But for a naughty-sounding hotel it was really quite lovely.

The staff spoke wonderful english and checking in was easy. Our room was spacious and the restaurant was really good. They made us some incredibly salads and we were spoilt for choice at the breakfast buffet.

If you are going to be stuck in Campo Grande you may as well be stuck in Hotel Deville Prime. And don’t let the big city get you down – just think – you’re so close to a visit the Pantanal, and beautiful brunettes…
